ASU volleyball loses 7th straight, setter Arellano hurt

Corrections added.

The Sun Devil volleyball team failed to end its losing streak, falling in four sets to Colorado 22-25, 25-17, 24-26, 23-25.

ASU (13-9, 2-8 Pac-12) has now lost seven straight matches.

Possibly even worse than the loss is what appeared to be a leg injury to sophomore setter Bianca Arellano, who fell wrong trying to block on Colorado’s match point.

Colorado (14-6, 6-4 Pac-12), which has yet to lose a conference match at home, took the first set 25-22 despite six kills from freshman outside hitter BreElle Bailey.

Sophomore outside hitter Macey Gardner racked up 14 kills but failed to hit for efficiency, and at many times had more errors than kills. She finished with a .068 hitting percentage. Bailey continued to carry the offensive load in sets two and three. ASU won set two 25-17 but dropped the third frame 24-26.

The Buffaloes took the match in set four, winning 25-23. Bailey finished with 13 kills but hit at a .222 clip.

Colorado relied on a diverse offense, and four different players totaled eight or more kills. Junior outside hitter Taylor Simpson and senior middle blocker Nikki Lindow combined for 21 of Colorado’s 49 kills.

The Buffaloes won the serve/receive battle, totaling seven service aces to ASU’s one.

Coach Watson and his team could not be reached for comment after the match.

The Sun Devils continue their road trip Friday night in Eugene with a 6:00 p.m. matchup against the Oregon Ducks.

Correction: Because of a source error, a previous version of this article contained several incorrect statistics, including the number of kills from Macey Gardner, Gardner’s hitting percentage and the number of team kills for Colorado. The story has been updated with the correct statistics.
