Jermaine Marshall couldn’t hit anything against Oregon State Saturday. The ASU senior guard missed the majority of the game due to foul trouble and missed his first 10 shots of the game.
But with 20 seconds left in the game, Marshall hit a 3-pointer from the left wing to tie the game at 67 and send it into overtime.
That’s all he was able to give ASU (21-10, 10-8 Pac-12), though. Marshall fouled out with 2:50 left in the game, and Oregon State (16-14, 8-10 Pac-12) pulled away in overtime to beat the Sun Devils 78-76.
It was ASU’s first overtime loss of the season and its fifth straight on the road.
Oregon State junior forward Eric Moreland came up huge for the Beavers, scoring 16 points and pulling down 19 rebounds.
Like ASU’s game against Oregon Tuesday, Oregon State jumped out to a 9-0 run to start the game, before ASU responded with a 10-0 run. Just as it looked like the Sun Devils were starting to calm down, Oregon State countered with an 8-0 run. ASU struck again with an 11-2 run.
The Beavers started out with a 1-3-1 zone defense, which trapped the Sun Devils’ ballhandlers and disrupted their offense. Oregon State mysteriously went away from the zone, which lead to ASU’s early comeback. The Beavers went back to the 1-3-1 zone and regained control late in the first half.
Marshall and redshirt sophomore point guard Jahii Carson, both combining for 48 points in the first meeting on Feb. 6, faced foul trouble early in the first half.
The first-half rollercoaster ended with Oregon State leading ASU 33-28 at halftime.
The Sun Devils still didn’t have any answers coming out of the locker room. Both teams shot well to begin the second half, but Oregon State jumped out to a 14-point near the 10-minute mark thanks to an 8-0 run.
But ASU slowly climbed back. Carson scored 17 of his 24 points in the second half. Junior forward Jonathan Gilling, who scored 11 points in the first half, hit three 3-pointers in the second half that helped the Sun Devils erase their deficit.
ASU was down seven points with 1:38 left in regulation before senior forward had an and-one play off a dunk. Oregon State senior guard Roberto Nelson missed a 3-pointer but rebounded his own shot and put it back with a layup to extend the lead. Gilling hit a 3-pointer with 34.1 seconds left to bring ASU within three points. After Oregon State freshman guard Hallice Cooke missed a free throw, ASU senior forward Shaquielle McKissic found Marshall for the game-tying 3-pointer.
In overtime, the Beavers took advantage of ASU’s foul trouble with dribble penetration, got to the free-throw line and create open looks. Oregon State led 76-72 after Nelson hit a 3-pointer with 21 seconds left, and it was too late for the Sun Devils to come back with free throws at that point.
Gilling also fouled out of the game with 1:56 left in overtime. He finished the game with a season-high 20 points.
Neither team shot well from the field, as ASU shot 41 percent compared to Oregon State’s 47 percent. The Beavers outrebounded the Sun Devils 44-33. ASU had 13 turnovers while Oregon State had 16.
Both teams are headed toward the Pac-12 Tournament, which begins Wednesday in Las Vegas. With the Pac-12 regular season complete, ASU still ended up with the No. 3 seed after California beat Colorado on Sunday and will have a bye in the first round. The Sun Devils will play the winner of Stanford-Washington State on Thursday.
