Tempe Police: Man drives under the influence, hits a wall

Tempe Police reported the following incident Thursday:

  • A 63-year-old Arizona City man was arrested Feb. 27 on the 1800 block of West Elliot Road on suspicion of aggravated driving under the influence, according to a police report.

Police responded to a 911 call from a witness when the vehicle exited the Interstate 10 freeway and struck a wall, police said.

The driver parked the vehicle and appeared lethargic and disorientated, police said.

The officer on the scene noticed a strong alcoholic odor on his breath and the man’s eyes were bloodshot, the report said.

When police asked the man to take a sobriety test, the man almost fell out of his vehicle and needed to lean on the car for support, police said.

The man agreed to take sobriety tests but was unable to complete them without endangering his safety.

The driver had a suspended California license because of a previous DUI arrest in 2011, according to the report.

He was transported to Tempe City Jail, where he was booked and held to see a judge, the report said.
