Tempe Police: Man runs into tree, collapses while fleeing from police

Tempe Police reported the following incidents Sunday:

A Tempe man was arrested Nov. 3 on the 1200 block of East Vista Del Cerro on suspicion of escaping from a police officer, resisting arrest under passive resistance and interfering with police, according to a police report.

Officers arrived on the scene after someone placed a call complaining about two men smoking marijuana in the laundry room of the apartment complex, police reported.

When the man spotted the officer, he warned his friend that cops were arriving and both men ran, according to the report.

The officer followed the man, identifying himself as a police officer, which led the man to continue running, police reported.

The man then struck his head on a low-hanging branch, causing him to fall to the ground, according to the report. The officer took advantage of his position and attempted to handcuff the man, police reported.

The man pushed the officer off and continued to resist arrest by refusing to show his hands, according to the report.

The officer was able to subdue the man by punching him once on his right cheek and was able to handcuff him, police reported. The officer then turned his attention to the second man at the scene, according to the report.

The man then removed his left hand from the handcuffs and ran outside the complex, but the officer was able to once again catch and handcuff the man, police reported.

The man was transported to Tempe City Jail, where he was booked, according to the report.

A 35-year-old Witch Wells, Arizona, man was arrested Nov. 6 on the 800 block of East Southern Avenue on suspicion of failing to confirm his identification as a sex offender, according to a police report.

The man told officers that he knew he needed to carry updated Arizona identification, police reported.

Officers reported the man’s last Arizona identification was issued to him in 2006 and that he was released from the Department of Corrections this year, according to the report. However, he has not yet obtained an updated identification card, police reported.

The man was transported and booked into Tempe City Jail, according to the report.
