Tempe Police: Man steals more than 28 packs of cigarettes from four different Circle K stations

Tempe Police reported the following incidents Tuesday:

A 26-year-old Phoenix man was arrested on Jan. 22 on the 100 block of East Broadway Road on suspicion of three counts of shoplifting and one count of robbery, according to a police report.

The man was initially contacted for trespassing, according to the report. Several officers immediately recognized the man from digital photographs taken from video surveillance that captured four incidents of theft in Tempe, police reported.

On Jan. 21, the man entered the Circle K located on 15 block of West Southern Avenue and asked for three packs of cigarettes, according to the report. The cashier placed the cigarettes on the counter and the man picked them up and left without paying for them, police reported.

On that same day, the man entered the Circle K located on the 1000 block of West Southern Avenue and took 10 packs of cigarettes without paying for them, according to the report. He also stole 15 packs of cigarettes from the Circle K located on the 1300 block of West University Drive, police reported.

The man entered another Circle K located on the 900 block of West Baseline road and told the cashier not to come too close and that he had a weapon, according to the report. He then selected multiple boxes of cigarettes and bottles of liquor and left without paying for the items, police reported.

Both officers and employees from the Circle K recognized the man from video surveillance recorded at the time of the theft, according to the report.

The man was transported to Tempe City Jail, where he was booked and held to see a judge, police reported
