Honored as Pac-12 Player of the Week in the morning; carving up the Cal State, Northridge defense in the afternoon.
All in a day’s work for senior guard Arnecia Hawkins.
Hawkins scored a team-high 18 points to lead No. 17 ASU women’s basketball to a 69-46 victory over CSUN.
Head coach Charli Turner Thorne was critical of her team’s performance in the postgame press conference.
“We had a no defense first quarter, we had a no offense fourth quarter and we’re trying to have this great season,” she said.
She was pleased, though, that she was able to get her bench players in the game.
“(It's) great to have a game going into Pac-12 where we get everybody in and we can kind of play loose with the lineups,” she said.
Kelsey Moos did sit, though, after tweaking her ankle in practice on Sunday.
“She should be healed up and ready to go, we’re pretty confident on that, for this weekend,” Turner Thorne said.
The team fell behind by eight in the first quarter before six different Sun Devils scored to tie it up at 19 the end.
With the score tied at 23, senior guard Peace Amukamara hit a three-pointer. It led to ASU scoring 12 consecutive points, sparking a 10-3 run. ASU opened up the game and held CSUN to just eight points in the quarter.
The pressure didn’t let up in the third. ASU had nine steals in the quarter; CSUN was only able to put up seven shot attempts.
ASU led by 28 at the end of it.
ASU’s offense stalled in the fourth quarter, an aspect on Turner Thorne’s mind during the press conference.
“Obviously I only played Sophie 20 minutes, but Sophie can’t get three shots in a game,” she said. “That’s us not working hard enough and smart enough on team offense.”
ASU got too comfortable with the lead, let up the gas, but maintained a comfortable lead to win 69-46.
"Hopefully we can refocus and get a little hungry," Turner Thorne said.
