Following practice Tuesday, ASU men’s basketball coach Bobby Hurley announced junior guard Andre Spight has left the program and intends to transfer. His leave is effective immediately.

Spight, who was one of Herb Sendek’s last signees before he was fired last spring, began the season as a starter for Hurley, but was relegated to bench duty early in the season.

In 27 games, Spight averaged 6.6 points per game, but played his best ball over the last couple weeks, scoring a season-high 21 in a Valentine’s Day loss to UCLA.

Senior forward Willie Atwood said the loss of Spight will impact the team, but ASU will do all it can to move on with as little adverse effect as possible.

“We just have to come out and do what we do every day, come to practice and try to find a way without him now,” Atwood said. “He was a good part of our team and he could come in and make some shots for us. We’ve got to find shots for other people now.”

With Spight’s departure, the Sun Devils have just eight healthy scholarship players remaining on the roster.
