Sun Devil hockey shutout the Arizona Wildcats 6-0 to complete the season sweep in what may be the teams' final meeting.
ASU traveled to Tucson to take on the Wildcats Friday in the Sun Devils' hybrid season. Until U of A becomes a Division I school - if that should occur - ASU will not play the Wildcats again.
The Wildcats led the Sun Devils 10-9 in shots on goal in the first frame, while ASU found a 2-0 lead. Junior left wing Ryan Ostertag was credited with the first goal on a shot from the left circle, with a second coming from freshman defenseman Jake Clifford.
The Sun Devils nearly got a third tally in the first period, but officials waved-off a goal freshman forward Anthony Croston, ruling that the net was off its moorings.
The second period was a physical one. Clifford was called for crosschecking, but Arizona failed to score on the advantage. They did, however, later score a shorthanded goal from freshman Joe Lappin, giving ASU a 3-0 lead.
Freshman wing Jordan Masters found a goal in front of the net just minutes later.
In the third, Lappin scored his second goal of the game, giving his team a 5-0 advantage.
Both teams hit the ice in a scrum soon after, and each team received a roughing penalty. During the four-on-four play, Lappin completed the hat trick.
The three-goal game for Lappin was the second in the history of ASU Division I hockey.
With a 6-0, ASU didn't look back for the rest of the game.
In net for the Sun Devils was junior Robert Levin, who got the Sun Devils' second shutout of the season.
ASU will be back home next Saturday to play the US 18-U National Team at 7:30.
