Andrew Hanks, president of Hollywood Invades Tempe, speaks at a Spring 2016 event in Tempe, Arizona.

Wit, satire and politics combine in the hit show American Dad! — but hit shows don't happen overnight, and creator Mike Barker will share his experiences in the industry with ASU student this Tuesday.

Mike Barker will visit ASU Tuesday, Sept. 13 at an event put on by the club Hollywood Invades Tempe. The Emmy-nominated writer and producer will talk about his career in Hollywood and how his hard work got him to where he is today.

The Hollywood Invades Tempe president, sophomore film student Andrew Hanks, said this event is going to be different from the club’s past ones because it is the first to feature executives from an animated series.

“I think if you’re a fan of animated shows or TV comedies in general, you’ll really enjoy the show,” Hanks said. “Mike Barker is an amazing creative artist and writer. If you want to have an evening full of laughs and to learn something about the TV industry, it’ll be a event you won’t want to miss!”

Hollywood Invades Tempe brings professionals from the industry to students interested in working in film. At the events, the club holds Q&A sessions which allow students to interact with the Hollywood executives on a personal level.

The club’s advisor and filmmaker, Adam Collis, said he knows that Hollywood Invades Tempe is truly unique in what they do.

“I know that students receive unique and valuable incite into both the process of making films and television, and of building a career, learning form those who are doing it day-by-day," Collis said.

This Tuesday’s event is another page in the club’s extensive list of professionals that visited the Valley.

The club’s social media director, Brooke Wakenhut, said Barker’s visit will be the first time an animated TV executive will visit the club at one of their events.

“It will be a one-of-a-kind show where we can learn about a very interesting genre of entertainment,” Wakenhut said. “Mike Barker is a talented and funny guy, so it will definitely be one of our most fun events so far!”

The variety of events the club puts on are for more than those interested in working in the industry — it is for anyone who shares a passion and love for film.

Come see Barker and the Hollywood Invades Tempe crew in action this Tuesday, Sept. 13. Doors open at 6:45 p.m. and the event starts at 7:30 p.m. at the Marston Theater on the ASU Tempe Campus. It is free to the public and food will be served.
