Going out to dinner on Valentine’s Day has long been an enjoyable — yet sometimes expensive — tradition for couples. As college students, it can be slightly trickier to find somewhere romantic at the right price.

Even those who are not in relationships may find themselves spending money on gifts, flowers, cards and food for friends and family to show their appreciation. Total spending for the holiday is expected to be around $20.7 billion this year, according to the National Retail Federation.

Whether you have a date or are just going out with some friends, here are a few tasty food options that everyone can enjoy this upcoming Thursday:

Downtown Phoenix campus

Windsor

Windsor serves tasty food at an affordable price and is perfect for date night. While there is an intimate ambiance here, it still maintains a casual atmosphere.

In terms of the food, the restaurant provides the classic American staples like soup, salads, burgers and barbecue. For a sweet treat after dinner, try Churn, an ice cream and candy parlor located right next door.

5 & Diner

If you’re looking for somewhere fun and unique to take your date, look no further than 5 & Diner.

The informal eatery gives customers a chance to enjoy classic American food in a 50s setting, complete with tabletop jukeboxes, checkered floors, old Coca-Cola ads, kitschy decor and bar seating.

Craving pancakes for dinner? While it is certainly the same style of American food you can get at most 24/7 diners, this longstanding Phoenix landmark is worth the experience.

POMO Pizzeria

Italian food is a known staple for date night, and it’s hard to beat an authentic slice of Neapolitan pizza from POMO Pizzeria.

Remodeled in October 2018, this relaxed eatery is sure to impress. The menu includes pastas and sandwiches, but the pizza definitely outshines it all. Plus, there are gluten-free and vegan options to satisfy everyone.

Tempe campus

Republic Ramen

Couples craving a warm bowl of noodles will love the fresh and affordable flavors of Republic Ramen.

With nine available ramen options, including vegetarian, this restaurant provides a range of options for both ramen fans and those just trying it for the first time.

Republic Ramen's dim lighting and drink options like boba, sake and beer are the perfect complements to a delicious meal and a laid-back Valentine's Day date.

Quartiere

Guests at Quartiere can expect to enjoy their meal in a quaint atmosphere with a range of Italian-inspired menu options that are sure to satisfy.

In particular, the bread and salads are extremely popular and wine is half-off every Thursday, which just so happens to coincide with Valentine's Day this year.

La Bocca

La Bocca is a pizzeria and wine bar that is located in the hub of downtown Tempe, only a short walking distance from campus.

This establishment offers dishes made with locally sourced ingredients and is a casual setting for a Valentine’s Day dinner. Some pizza options include roasted chicken pesto, truffle mushroom and classic margherita.

West campus

Thee Pitts Again

If being transported back to the 50s sounds like a fun date, then Thee Pitts Again is definitely worth a visit.

Not only is the aesthetic every “Grease” fan’s dream, but the food has been featured by Guy Fieri on his show "Diners Drive-ins and Dives." The restaurant's award-winning barbecue is the focus on the menu, though they do serve a meatless and veggie sandwich as well.

Tacos Tijuanas

Stop by the Tacos Tijuanas food truck (or one of their indoor locations) on Valentine's Day if you're craving a mouthwatering taco packed with authentic Latin American flavors.

Whether ordering to-go or enjoying your food in the outdoor seating area under the strung lights, it’s hard to say no to the tacos from this popular spot. Their menu features delicious street taco classics like horchata, homemade corn tortillas and fresh guacamole.

Polytechnic campus

Joe’s Farm Grill

If you're looking for something more local and farm-based, Joe's Farm Grill is a short drive away from the Polytechnic campus.

Not only do they serve fresh food with local ingredients for dinner, but those who prefer breakfast and lunch will be pleased to see the restaurant is open every day from 8 to 9 p.m.

Originally built in 1966, this establishment offers both indoor and outdoor seating with retro touches all throughout.

Food options are primarily American, with numerous burger and salad options, organic soda and amazing milkshakes.

Slate Bistro and Bar

With weekly chef specials, Slate Bistro and Bar is always creating something new and seasonal to put on its menu.

Overlooking a golf course, this eatery with a full bar and patio seating is located in the more secluded location of Trilogy Golf Club at Power Ranch.

While there are some finer options on the pricier side, the bistro also offers classic salads, burgers and sandwiches.
