The Walmart store located below Vista Del Sol on the ASU Tempe campus is closing with no current plan for a replacement.

The store, known as a “Walmart on Campus,” opened on May 15, 2013 and was the second of its kind in the U.S.

Tiffany Wilson, director of corporate communications for Walmart Inc., said that after a review process, the decision was made to close the store.

“We plan to close the store by June 28, ending the pilot we started a few years ago,” she said. “We will continue to integrate the positive business practices we gained from these campus-based stores into the broader fleet moving forward."

Walmart has closed two other Arizona locations this year, one in Tucson and the other in Chandler.

Some students took to social media to express their disapointment over losing a convenient grocery store and pharmacy. The closest Walmart to the Tempe campus will now be two miles away on Southern Avenue and Rural Road.

It has not yet been determined what will occupy the campus location next or when a replacement will arrive.

“Right now nothing is planned, but the space will be advertised as being available,” an ASU spokesperson said.
