A lawsuit filed against ASU and the Arizona Board of Regents has been updated to include former Sun Devil running back Cam Skattebo as a defendant.
Former ASU offensive lineman Mattheos Katergaris originally sued the school because of injuries allegedly sustained in a golf cart after a practice on July 31, 2023. The update cites Skattebo's actions as "the actual and proximate cause" of Katergaris's injury, according to the complaint.
Katergaris is now suing both Skattebo and ABOR for negligence and is claiming damages of at least $300,000.
Per the lawsuit, on or around the day of the incident, directions were given to the team regarding "the proper use of golf carts" and the team was "explicitly told" rear seats of the carts had a weight limit of 600 pounds.
According to the complaint, Katergaris and another player were seated in those seats before Skattebo "jumped on the back of the golf cart" and "jumped up and down on the rear bench as the golf cart traveled a considerable distance."
The suit alleges Skattebo's actions led to the bench of the cart breaking and Katergaris falling from the cart and "sustain(ing) serious bodily injury, which resulted in months of medical care."
Katergaris was listed on the Sun Devils roster in 2022 but didn't see any game action during his freshman season.
Skattebo rushed for 1,711 yards and 21 touchdowns this past season. He was the catalyst for the team's highest final AP ranking since the 1996 Rose Bowl team, earning a fifth-place Heisman finish in the process.
Skattebo is set to participate in the 2025 NFL Draft Combine but will only participate in the vertical and broad jump, according to a post on X by Daniel Rios for Cronkite Sports.
