A Tempe Police squad car is pictured outside the Tempe Police Department Headquarters on Thursday, Sept. 3, 2020 in Tempe.

A Waymo was involved in a car accident resulting in a death near Lemon Street and Rural Road early this morning, according to the Tempe Police Department.

AZFamily reported that around 1:30 a.m. Tempe PD responded to the accident. A Waymo spokesperson told AZFamily that a motorcycle rear-ended the Waymo before a second car struck the motorcyclist and continued to drive.

The motorcyclist was transported to the hospital and later died, a Tempe PD spokesperson said in a written statement. The car driver was an ASU student, the spokesperson said.

No riders were in the Waymo at the time of the crash, a Waymo spokesperson said in a written statement.

"Safety is our highest priority at Waymo. We are deeply saddened by this event and we are fully cooperating with law enforcement and regulators," the Waymo spokesperson said.

A description of the car and information about the motorcyclist has not been released. The investigation is ongoing, the Tempe PD spokesperson said.

The story was updated on Sept. 14 at 9:05 p.m. to include additional details that became available about the driver of the car.

This story is developing and may be updated.
