The NCAA acknowledged today that its enforcement staff was pursuing alleged violations of sports betting rules for 13 former men's basketball student-athletes. ASU is one of the schools these former student-athletes played for.
The allegations include "student-athletes betting on and against their own teams, sharing information with third parties for purposes of sports betting, knowingly manipulating scoring or game outcomes and/or refusing to participate in the enforcement staff’s investigation," according to the NCAA's press release.
The NCAA is not publicly naming the involved student-athletes until "the infractions process has concluded," according to the release. None of the student-athletes being investigated are currently enrolled at their previous NCAA schools.
The University and its staff are not alleged to be involved in these violations. The NCAA is not seeking penalties for the school or its staff for the players' actions.
"Arizona State University is aware of the NCAA investigation and outcome related to a former student-athlete who is no longer enrolled at ASU," said an ASU spokesperson in a written statement. "The university cooperated fully with all inquiries, and was not implicated in any way."
The NCAA did not specify during which basketball season these alleged violations occurred, but said the enforcement staff was notified of unusual betting activities around regular-season games.
Under NCAA regulations, it is not allowed for student-athletes to engage in sports betting – at a professional or collegiate level – for any sports that have NCAA championships. The regulations maintain that any student-athlete who bets on their own team will lose any remaining collegiate eligibility.
Along with ASU, ongoing cases include student-athletes associated with Eastern Michigan, Temple, New Orleans, North Carolina A&T and Mississippi Valley, according to the NCAA.
