The NCAA announced the removal of the Division 1 football spring transfer window in favor of a single unified window today. After voting on the removal of the spring window, the Division I Administrative Committee did not sign off on the proposed Jan. 2 to 11 window as the new unified window.

A Jan. 2 start date would allow almost the entirety of the college football season to be completed, outside of the College Football Playoff Semifinals and Final.

The spring window was previously established as a 15-day window in April 2023, which allowed players to transfer and enroll for the final time before the season started. In the 2024-25 season, it was reduced to a 10-day period.

According to the NCAA, the spring transfer window created a lot of concerns among coaches as many players departed just a few months before the season starts, making them a lot harder to replace.

This year's April window saw more than 1,100 players enter the portal.

ASU is one of many schools that have benefited and been hindered by the spring window. In the case of being benefited, notable players to come to Tempe in the spring portal are redshirt seniors Chamon Metayer and Malik McClain in 2024, and redshirt freshman Wade Helton and sophomore Maurice Williams in 2025.

The University notably lost players such as quarterback Jaden Rashada and wide receiver Elijhah Badger in 2024. In 2025, the Sun Devils lost althetes like running back Alton McCaskill and defensive lineman J.P. Deeter.

The committee will wait to hear feedback from student-athletes before settling on exact dates for the new January window. They will contemplate the changes in a meeting set to take place in October, according to the NCAA.
