ASU redshirt sophomore quarterback Sam Leavitt (10) runs with the ball during a game against NAU on Sunday, Aug. 31, 2025, at Mountain America Stadium in Tempe. ASU won 38-19.

Redshirt sophomore Sam Leavitt intends to enter the transfer portal when it opens on Jan. 2, according to multiple reports. This comes just a day after Leavitt didn't attend the team banquet.

After transferring from Michigan State ahead of the 2024 season, Leavitt was a major piece in revitalizing the ASU football program. After going 3-9 in the 2023 season, he came in and led the Sun Devils to an 10-2 regular season in 2024, followed by a Big 12 Championship and a College Football Playoff berth.

After a strong debut season for the Sun Devils, throwing for 2,885 yards, 24 touchdowns and six interceptions, his 2025 campaign was hampered by injury. He only played in seven games this season, throwing for 1,628 yards, 10 touchdowns and three interceptions.

Leavitt's potential departure leaves a gap in a vital position on the field. However, ASU does have a few options to fall back on. With 4-star freshman Cameron Dyer and incoming freshman 4-star Jake Fette, the Sun Devils have a couple of young guys they can turn to. The transfer portal is also an option for head coach Kenny Dillingham

During the banquet, Dillingham wished Leavitt well "in whatever his future may hold," per Chris Karpman.
