Audrey Lippert:
Welcome back to the podcast. This week we interviewed Jazmine Goodwin, an ASU graduate student and the founder of What the Fem Media, about the importance of financial literacy for women.
Trent Ashdown:
We also sat down with Suzanne Shupe, a first generation college student, about her experience at ASU as part of a two part podcast series by podcast reporter Myah France on ASU's perception and how to affect students.
Chloe Beery:
Hi, welcome back to State Press Play. I'm Chloe Beery, and today I'm joined by Jazmine Goodwin, the founder of What the Fem Media. So Jazmine, tell me a little bit about what the femme media and what the organization is.
Jazmine Goodwin:
Yes. So What the Fem Media is a business and finance media company for women building wealth for the first time. This was inspired by my own experiences of like trying to navigate money and business and finance on my own. And so this platform is really dedicated to helping women be empowered in their financial futures and whatever they want to do with their careers in their life through having the knowledge that they need to know to make informed decisions.
Chloe Beery:
So you mentioned a little bit your motivations behind this. Tell me a little bit more about those and what keeps you going.
Jazmine Goodwin:
Yes, I think so much of my journey has been seeing just how when you don't know what you don't know how that can limit you and opportunities, in access, and just being able to live a life that is true to you and what you're passionate about and what you care about. And so I want to be able to unlock that opportunity for other women through bridging that gap of what they don't know, empowering them with knowledge that they need to know when it pertains to money and finance so they can build that generational wealth, whatever that looks like, that can be their social network, that can be financially, that can be just knowing and having knowledge to be able to move through rooms in people and places and spaces to just take their lives to the next level. And I think what keeps me going is just the impact of that and knowing how it's a domino effect. Just one conversation, one exchange of information and knowledge can literally changed the entire trajectory of someone's life and that is exactly what happened to me and what led me to even start with what the femme media was like being able to get access to information and knowledge of things that I didn't know and then once I was informed I'm like wow like this completely...

Myah France:
Welcome back to State Press Play. I'm Myah France, and I'm here with Suzanne Shupe. Would you like to introduce yourself?
Suzanne Shupe:
Hi, I'm Suzanne. I'm a freshman at ASU. I'm majoring in in journalism and mass comm.
Myah France:
All right, so I just wanted to know a little bit about how you perceived ASU before you became a student as a first generation student.
Suzanne Shupe:
So I live here and a lot of times it's like the party school or it's like, why are you going to ASU when there's so many other things that you could be doing besides ASU? And especially being here, it's like, why wouldn't you go somewhere far away? But I just decided to come here because it was like easier financially and it was just like close to home and I was like, I think I can get it done here and then if I want to leave eventually I can just go after.
Myah France:
And then also how did you perceive Barrett before you came and after you got accepted?
Suzanne Shupe:
I really liked Barrett because I was like, oh it's a chance for me to be like I'm a part of something that's more than just ASU and so I really wanted it and then when I got in I was like okay I want to go to ASU because I got in.
