Sophomore forward and NHL first-round draft pick Cullen Potter has entered the transfer portal, per Scott Wheeler of The Athletic.
In the ever-changing world of college sports, big names hitting the transfer portal have become a give-and-take for fans. With the star forward picking up a season-ending injury in January, the fear of a potential Potter transfer snuck in long before the portal opened.
April 12 turned this fear into reality, with the Calgary Flames' prospect set to move schools. Michigan State is being named as a projected landing spot, the school Potter initially committed to out of high school before he flipped his commitment to ASU.
Stepping into Tempe as a 17-year-old, Potter put up 22 points as a freshman, gaining national attention.
Potter started slow in his sophomore year, but eventually took a huge step. Before his injury, Potter was on a 15-game run, recording 21 points. However, a hit against Miami (OH) on Jan. 10 ended his season, his final stat line for 2025-26 reading 26 points in 24 games.
The sophomore finished his Sun Devil career with 48 points in 59 games. Potter will now have his pick of where he wants to transfer.
After missing out on the NCHC Tournament and finishing the season below expectations, Potter's transfer means that ASU’s top three point scorers from last season won’t be returning, as senior forwards Cruz Lucius and Bennett Schimek both graduated.
Potter is not the only name set to enter the transfer portal, with others like sophomore defensemen Brasen Boser and Sam Court being rumored to enter the portal. However, ASU has a recruiting class of 13 coming to Tempe for the 2026-27 season with the potential to add more players through the portal.
