We hear about the girls who go days and weeks without eating. We hear about the girls who find themselves leaning over a toilet after every meal. We hear about the girls who overeat, only to hate themselves into starvation mode the next day. The ones we don’t hear about are the majority: the people, not just girls, who are obsessively monitoring what goes into their bodies, and what their bodies expel, in silence.

High school graduation ushers in several important life questions, starting with whether or not you choose to go to college, and if you do, where you will live. Most four-year universities have on-campus housing and in turn enforce some sort of housing expectation for students. ASU encourages its students live on campus for at least one year unless they can prove extenuating circumstances to receive an exemption.

As a woman, I am thankful to live in modern-day America, as those before me could not even imagine the world I am living in today. I am excited to be educated, successful and someday, renowned. Currently, I am 18 and the 2016 presidential election is only months away. Needless to say, I am thrilled to be able to exercise the right given to me nearly a century ago by the nineteenth amendment.

I started attending ASU in August with high hopes and big expectations, and I am thankful to say this school has not let me down. While much of my college experience is unique to my seemingly never-ending schedule, I know many of my daily struggles are shared with a lot of other students. Some days my venture into adulthood feels heavy enough to incapacitate me, and other days, I cannot help but laugh at how simplistic my life has become. Every day, I learn something new about my school, myself and life in general, but here are the ten most impactful lessons I have learned in my first semester away at college.
