Arizona is beautiful. From the cacti to the mountains to the forests, rivers and deserts, it is a picturesque landscape. For some it is a winter escape or a place to train in the spring, and for others Arizona is home. For everyone, Arizona is distinctively unique.

In provocative and sentimental glory, rapper Tupac Shakur — who has been dead for 15 years — graced the crowds of the Coachella Festival Sunday with a celestial yet digital performance.

To The State Press readers,

Ladies of ASU, how many of you are out there studying hard for your MRS degree? Our guess would be very few.

Bravo to generosity and activism at ASU. Students traveled barefoot Tuesday as part of TOMS Shoes’ “One Day Without Shoes” movement. Participators donated a pair of shoes while raising awareness for the “One for One” cause, where TOMS donates a pair of shoes to a child for every pair of shoes purchased. As a following act, a group of ASU students started a company that applies the same “one for one” idea to bamboo bikes. For every bamboo bike purchased, the company sends a hand-cycle made of bamboo to someone using a wheelchair in Africa. This is no slacktivism. Nicely done ASU students.

Politicians are politicians, no matter what stage of their career. We always hope that the petty attacks, slanderous statements and lack of regard for professionalism during elections will slowly work their way out of our political discourse, especially now that Rick Santorum has suspended his campaign.

Like shoes, charity comes in a variety of different shapes, sizes and colors. TOMS embraced this ideology and built a brand around it. And they do a lot of good with it. For every pair of shoes the company sells, they also donate one to children in parts of the world where footwear is a luxury rather than an accessory.

For the first time in several years, fans of all the major sports teams in the Valley have something to cheer about.

In a town that is descendant of the Wild West, Tempe residents value history. There is something distinctively pleasing both architecturally and sentimentally to see a building stand the test of time. After months of renovations and development controversy, the City of Tempe plans to reopen the Hayden Flour Mill on April 25.

Bravo to Katelyn Boyd for withdrawing her name from the National Pro Fastpitch Draft to try and represent her country in this summer’s World Cup of Softball. The senior shortstop is currently hitting .448 with 14 home runs and 16 stolen bases. Boyd weighed her options heavily, and although she was likely to be selected in the top three of the draft, she didn’t want to miss out on the opportunity to play for the U.S. Boyd will tryout for the national team in June.

The ASU football program is no stranger to change, but the most recent announcement will test the team and its fans more than any of its prior transformations.

We never thought we would tire of writing about Proposition 203 and medical marijuana, but alas, the leafy green substance that is feared by some, revered by others and narrowly agreed to have medical qualities by Arizona voters finds itself stealing headlines once again.

How many times have you lost your Sun Card? It’s usually no big deal, right? You drop it on a run, in between class or somewhere you just can’t remember, but the loss is only momentary. You may be stranded outside of your dorm or unable to print anything until you get a new one, but a couple minutes in line, a $25 charge to your student account, and you’re ready to go with a new card in hand. It’s not like you lost your entire wallet or purse and are now unable to pay for lunch or gas or anything that might require a debit card. This will change.

Life is all about happiness. It’s an endless search for smiles, memories and things that make us feel good.

Bravo to the softball team for becoming one of the few ASU teams to sweep UA this year. The Sun Devils’ women’s basketball and women’s soccer teams are the only other ASU squads to go undefeated against the Wildcats this season. The softball team completed its three-game sweep of its rival on Sunday afternoon after coming from behind for the third straight game. Freshman third baseman Haley Steele came up huge in the series when she hit her first career grand slam to propel the Sun Devils past the Wildcats.

From new uniforms, to a new football coach, to a new athletic director, the changes within the ASU athletic department keep coming.

Wednesday might seem a bit late in the week to focus our editorial spotlight on spring break. Or perhaps, it couldn’t be timelier.
(03/27/12 1:13am)
If there is one constant we’ve been able to isolate over the semester in these editorial columns, it is that there is no definitive price tag on higher education. There is such a myriad of costs, expenses and associated or unexpected fees that all show up on your bill in one form or another — to report an exact number would hold credibility only but for a short amount of time.

However you refer to the stretch of payment that connects East 6th Street with University Drive — Frat Row, Alpha Drive or that boarded up, post-apocalyptic dysbropia— you will now be doing so only in the past tense.

Bravo to the start of March Madness. The NCAA tournament is always one of the most exciting times in sports. There’s always the dash of frustration mixed in when your bracket inevitably fails, but there’s also the overwhelming sense of accomplishment (and subsequent gloating) when your upset pick carries your bracket to glory among your friends. This year’s tourney is already wrought with drama, and the first round is just under way. Can Syracuse contend for the title without Fab Melo? Who will be this year’s Butler, or will there even be one? Stay tuned for all the action — you know we will.
