Graduation. For some, it’s a glimmer in the distance. For others, it’s one class within reach. While the walls of ASU keep us safe from the real world, we calmly sit back and daydream of the life to come. We close our textbooks, prop our feet up and ponder the career ahead. Some of us will be doctors; others will be lawyers. Of course, the majority of us don’t aspire to fulfill the dreams of our parents. But no matter what the degree, when the tassel moves from right to left, a new chapter begins and the race is on. Our life has finally started.

We applaud President Barack Obama’s recent promise to send National Guard troops to the Southwest border region and to increase funding for border security. While SB 1070 has sparked a heated debate about “racial profiling,” we find great comfort that Americans of all races can agree on one thing: Protecting the border is a must.

More than 60,000 students across four campuses have a right to wear the maroon and gold. That’s about equal the population of Flagstaff, almost twice the size of Dover, Del., and at least 5,000 more students than NAU and UA’s undergraduate populations combined. In sum, we’re big. ASU is more like a small city than a school, so don’t be disappointed if your English 101 teacher forgets your name…or never learns it.

If you’ve ever put on pants, you can thank 1890, the year the modern zipper was invented. It was also the year we got the paper clip, Dwight Eisenhower was born, and when the first issue of this paper was printed.

Bravo to the end of the semester. We still have finals week to stress about and get through, but we’re ready to take a break from school. Spring 2010 has definitely had its ups and downs, but we’re glad to see the tail end of the semester go by. The one thing we might miss? Springtime weather. The temperature is already starting to rise and, by the time graduation rolls around, we expect soaring highs. Still, we would brave several months of dry heat over essay exams any day.

We’re not sure how it happened, but we’ve reached the end of the semester again. The final full week of school comes to a close tomorrow, and final exams and projects will likely absorb all of ASU students’ energies until mid-May. At this time of the semester at The State Press, we like to look back and compile a list of the biggest ASU news stories of the term, so here are some of the most important stories to affect the University this semester.

If you’ve ever had the desire to be woefully misrepresented on one of cable’s sleaziest channels, you’re about to have that chance — MTV’s “The Real World” is coming to Tempe.

Not to be outdone by Eyjafjallajökull, the Icelandic volcano responsible for sending a giant cloud of ash to Europe, grounding flights and humorously forcing journalists to attempt to say its name, Arizona made headline news around the world on Friday when Gov. Jan Brewer signed a controversial immigration bill into law.

Bravo to Pat’s Run. A record-breaking 28,000 people turned out to the sixth annual fundraiser event Saturday. The yearly run honors Pat Tillman, an ASU alumnus and former Arizona Cardinal who turned down a three-year, $3.6-million contract in order to serve in the military after Sept. 11, 2001. Pat’s Run raises money for educational scholarships in conjunction with the Pat Tillman Foundation, a foundation established after Tillman was killed in action in 2004. We’re proud to have such a unique event in the Valley that commemorates the life and sacrifice of an ASU alumnus while working to help the community today.

Yesterday, the most prestigious athletic program at ASU suffered penalties for infractions dating back to 2004. The ASU baseball team, currently ranked No. 1 in the nation, was sanctioned by the University as a result of an investigation that led to the forced resignation on legendary head coach Pat Murphy.

Bravo to the Library of Congress for archiving Tweets. All public tweets posted since March 2006 will be preserved by the Library, forever cementing the social media explosion in history. Access to the tweets will have some restrictions, but the content will be archived digitally, allowing the world’s future population to know exactly what information users deemed necessary to spread to the world at any point. There’s only one problem: This archive means Justin Bieber will forever be a trending topic.
Bravo to walking for water. This Tuesday, 35 students participated in Be Hope to Her, a campaign to raise awareness about young women in rural African villages who spend hours every day fetching water for their families. The participants walked one mile across the Tempe campus with buckets on their heads, filled them with five gallons at water and carried them back. This event was one of 22 hosted by Nuru International, a humanitarian organization working to eradicate poverty in a sustainable way. Even though ASU is in a desert, we rarely think about how easy it is to get our water. We’re glad students had the opportunity to participate in an event that shows just how difficult basic necessities can be for some people across the globe to obtain.

Arizona might not be the leader in a lot of things, but if a bill passed by the state House of Representatives Tuesday is signed by Gov. Jan Brewer, the state might just take the lead on extremely tough — not to mention extremely contentious — immigration policy.

ASU isn’t always considered an athletic powerhouse. A solid program? Yes. But not a powerhouse in the category of a USC or Florida or North Carolina, where the alumni list is filled with Hall of Famers and All-Stars in a number of different sports.
