Bravo to cool pilot technology. For those of you who dreamed of flying when you were little, consider checking out the Polytechnic campus. Flight instructors in training are working with a new device this semester that allows them to practice various flight and training techniques on one of the most realistic simulators the campus has seen to date. Cool? We think so. Not only are there plans to integrate classes in order to take full advantage of the techology, it’s just awesome that students have access to a program developed by the Air Force Research Laboratory. We’re wondering if we can use it to train for our dream aircraft — State Press One.

When one thinks of the basketball powerhouses of the Pac-10, certain schools come to mind immediately. For the men, UCLA and The School That Shall Not Be Named boast national titles, NBA stars and conference titles galore. On the women’s side, Stanford and its 18 Pac-10 titles is the most dominant women’s basketball program west of Tennessee.

It takes only a few seconds to send a text message. It takes a whole lot less than that to kill someone with your car.

Did you know that your cost to attend ASU might skyrocket next semester? That the economic recovery surcharge may double? That tuition will go up?

Just as the devastation in Haiti was fading — prematurely — from our minds, Chile and Japan both experienced high-registering earthquakes over the weekend.

Bravo to the ASU men's basketball team's victory over UA. Aside from Ty Abbott's ... umm ... “traveling violations,” the world has been nothing but unicorns and rainbows all week for Sun Devils fans. That's primarily because, led by Abbott's 28 points, the Devils took out the kitty cats by a score of 73-69 last Sunday in Tucson. With the win, ASU has now beaten UA in five of its last six meetings on the hardwood. It’s a beautiful thing — like, say, a Rose Bowl appearance. Soak it in, Sun Devils … and, when possible, rub it in.

Hummer, the unnecessarily large, overly-destructive off-roading vehicle that is more often seen on suburban streets than rugged terrain, may have guzzled its last gallon. Well, at least on the production side.

Powering one of the largest universities in the country sounds like an environmentalist’s worst nightmare.

There are lots of expensive things in life — from a new car to higher education. Especially in tough economic times, the key to getting the most out of your money is spending smartly. You don’t buy a $50,000 BMW when all you can afford is a Honda Civic. And when you get that shiny new Civic, you expect your monthly payments to be constant. Honda can’t say, “Hey, sorry, we’re in a bit of a financial pinch right now. We’re going to need you to start paying more each month for your car than we originally told you. Is that cool?”

Bravo to the efforts of U.S. Olympians. Team USA certainly has some cheering to do with athletes snatching up medals left and right, currently leading the medal count. Downhill skier Lindsey Vonn nabbed her first gold medal Wednesday, with fellow American Julia Mancuso, who won silver, right behind her. Speed skater Shani Davis and snowboarder Shaun White grabbed repeat golds. White continued to entertain the crowd with a higher scoring victory lap after he had secured first place. But even those who didn’t quite make the podium deserve congratulations — just to compete on an international scale is an achievement worth applauding.

Perhaps the main reason you find yourself on campus is to attend class, but ASU is home to far more interesting things than lecture halls. Each year the Museums, Galleries and Collections Committee hosts a “We Love ASU Collections” day for the public. Community members are able to tour the largest meteorite collection in the world in the same day that they see the 148-bell symphonic carillon rescued from the Memorial Union fire and now housed in Old Main, not to mention the myriad of other interesting tidbits ASU offers. We might not take time out of our day to visit the “collections” of the University, but in the spirit of Valentine’s Day, here are the often-overlooked things we love about ASU:

Bravo to the age of Web 3.0. Remember the days of dial-up Internet? So do we, but pretty soon it’ll be a thing of the past. Google announced Wednesday that it’s planning to build and test ultra high-speed broadband networks that will deliver Internet up to 100 times faster than the average current speed. That means when you’re surfing cutethingsfallingasleep.org during ASU 101, those mind-numbingly adorable videos are going to hit you faster than ever before. As Google’s announcement suggested, imagine downloading a high-definition, full-length movie in less than five minutes. Pretty awesome, right? Especially if it’s a feature film about kittens falling asleep.
