Don’t look now, but as of Wednesday, the New York Knicks are the only undefeated team in the NBA after five games into the season.
The Knicks took the same direction as the Boston Celtics and the San Antonio Spurs did, and proved that a team with an old, but experienced group of players can still be a legitimate playoff contender. Carmelo Anthony is playing like he never left the London Olympics, as he’s the league’s early leading scorer at 26.8 points per game.
J.R. Smith is shooting lights-out, as his 72.2 3-point percentage is the best in the NBA thus far.
Not only the good ol’ Knickerbockers have the second-most prolific scoring offense in the NBA, but they also give up the fewest points per game. Yes, defense has arrived in New York.
Despite the hype surrounding the new-look Brooklyn Nets, I always thought coming into the season that the Knicks were the best team in the Empire State.
But I have never expected them to be this good.
New York will likely cool down at some point of the season, but this season might be the Knicks’ chance to break out from their prolonged playoff slump.
