My roommate is a Boston Celtics fan. At some point every game, he’ll always say the team would struggle without Rajon Rondo.
Well, so much for that.
The point guard tore his ACL, or anterior cruciate ligament, and won’t return for the rest of the season. So what do the Celtics do?
There are good points for either blowing the team up or attempting to make one last run, but I think they should trade forwards Paul Pierce and Kevin Garnett.
This team struggled offensively with Rondo. He was the only consistent source of offense for this team, and without him, the team now lacks the best facilitator in the game. This team doesn’t have a true point guard with Avery Bradley, Jason Terry, Courtney Lee and Leandro Barbosa.
The Celtics had very slim odds to make a deep run in the Eastern Conference with Rondo. Pierce and Garnett would be great assets on a competitive team. The Celtics could look to receive young players or expiring contracts in return to create a squad around Rondo when he returns during the second half next season.
Salvaging two fan favorite players just to make the eighth seed and get beat by Miami, New York or Chicago just doesn’t make sense.
Just ask the Phoenix Suns when it failed to trade Steve Nash and how they feel about that now.
