The No.15 ASU men's golf team finished third in the Alister MacKenzie Invitational hosted by the University of California, Berkeley on Tuesday with a 20-under par (832) on the scorecard.

The Sun Devils were originally slated to compete in the Paintbrush Invitational in Colorado, but inclement weather resulted in it being cancelled. Instead, ASU returned to Meadow Club in Fairfax, California for the Alister MacKenzie Invitational. This opportunity gave the Sun Devils to defend their title from last season.

In the team's third tournament of the fall season, freshman Paul Chaplet finished tied for seventh, as he picked up his first top-10 finish of his Sun Devil career.

“I’ve known Paul would break out any day with a performance like this,” head coach Matt Thurmond said. “As a freshman, it takes a little while to get things going sometimes, but this was a big step for him.”

Chaplet was in contention in all three rounds and wrapped up his first top-10 finish of the fall season, shooting 10-under par (203), and completing two rounds below 70 for the tournament.

Thurmond said that despite the team finishing third, the team could have done better.

"We hit the ball pretty well, but we struggled around the greens for various reasons," Thurmond said. “I expected us to perform better."

All five of the Sun Devils finished in the top half of the leaderboard. Sophomore Chun An Yu finished tied for 14th (-5), sophomore Alex Del Rey finished tied for 19th (-4), freshman Mason Andersen finished tied for 41st (+2) and sophomore Blake Wagoner finished 52nd (+4).

The Sun Devils will have two weeks off before their next tournament at the Tavistock Collegiate Invitational in Windermere, Florida, hosted by the University of Central Florida on Oct. 22-24.
