It is not every day that you see me writing about printers. I actually try to avoid writing about those things because nothing amazing has come from them recently. While this is still true, ASU has tried to make printing that much easier with their recent enactment of the Print Anywhere feature offered on campus.

While not everyone will admit it, one the best parts about holidays and birthdays is giving gifts. The timeless tradition of wrapping up that little something is starting to become a thing of the past with the push to bring the gift exchange online. For some time now, retailers like Starbucks, Apple, Google, Target and Amazon have made buying gift cards online an option (which can be sent via email or printed). While this has been integrated as a helpful means of gift giving for people who are geologically far away, sending gifts online has not fully taken over. But Facebook has recently taken a move to change this dynamic some more.

If you are an avid follower of the Tech Spec blog here on the State Press Magazine website, then you know that when I write about technology, I tend to focus on how it will help better you, whether in love, music or sociability. My philosophy has always been that technology is something that offers us some sort of improvement in our lives and that we should accept most of it with open arms. But this semester, with my class schedule and longer list of extracurricular activities, I am finding some mixed feelings about my beloved tech.

Valentine’s day is less than a week away, which means it is the season for pink and red decorations, chocolate and, of course, love. While some of you lucky guys or gals have a special someone for the big day, many do not. Trying to maintain good grades, stay well rested and continue hanging out with friends all while building a love life can be nearly impossible at times. But for those who want to do it all, a more manageable method has become available: online dating.

Being constantly surrounded by technology, students have the option to do whatever they want while waiting for class to start. The best part about having this technology is how fast improvements come to progress the overall user experience. There have been different apps that I push on all of my smartphone-owning friends that truly better their everyday habits, like the Android app, MightyText (which allows you to view and send text messages via your computer). Recently, I have come upon three tips/apps that have transformed my phone usage.

On Wednesday, RIM (Research In Motion) announced their next big step in the smartphone industry, with their new operating system and lineup of smartphones. RIM, which owns the Blackberry brand, fell behind in the smartphone market over the last two years as they took a less progressive approach to their previous phone releases. Not making the jump has caused Blackberry to take a major hit and this push is possibly their last chance to keep afloat. Now, Blackberry has released a redesigned OS that is looking to push its way up to the top, with the big hitters like iOS and Android. Do not get your hopes up.

Everyone who has a laptop, smartphone or tablet has software installed on it. Software is what makes the phone usable for consumers. There are different types of software available too; some examples are operating systems (OS’s), programs and apps. Once the software is installed, it is ready to use and functions accordingly.

Remember back in 2009, when the iPhone 3GS and the Motorola Droid hit the scene? Those phones were top-of-the-line, with their single-core processors and 3G data speeds. One of the coolest features of these phones was their touchscreen. Both phones had similar-quality screens that measured approximately 3.5 inches. But times have definitely changed since then. Today, finding a smartphone with a screen size that small is quite difficult. Companies are moving towards bigger and bigger screens. Some phones, like the Galaxy Note 2, are less than 2 inches away from the size of the iPad Mini or Nexus 7 tablet.

Your phone has made its last phone call; it died and it’s time to go invest in a new phone. Be warned though, you may be surprised to find that your upgrade is missing a wall charger. UK phone carrier O2 released HTC’s One X+ last year without the wall charger in the packaging. Does this mean that we are now stuck on our current charging devices? Not quite.

It is COLD outside. So cold that many ASU students are bundling up as much as they can when they head out to class. Staying warm is priority number one nowadays, but everyone still wants to continue their fast paced life of talking on the phone, sending emails, listening to music and more; it is this season’s conundrum. Luckily, apparel designers have come up with solutions so we can have the best of both worlds. Some of these new advancements include earmuffs and beanies that have headphones built in and gloves that are touchscreen capable.

CES, or the Consumer Electronics Show, came and went last week, with not too much new to offer. In my previous post, I discussed a couple of the top items that went on display at the show, but I only touched the surface on one of the most hyped items there: Samsung’s “Youm” flexible display.

Unless you are a technology junkie (like yours truly), you probably do not know about CES. CES stands for the Consumer Electronics Show, which is a four-day event (Jan. 8-11) that displays some of the technological advancements that consumers will see in the upcoming year. Over the past few days, some of the headliners have gone on stage and debuted their newest pieces of tech and there were two items that really stood out; these technological improvements, if adopted, could change our lives.

Every school holiday means time to relax, unwind and probably spend with family. One of the most common ways that families, including my own, spend a break is to take a road trip. Just hearing the words “road trip” can make the strongest man shudder with fear. Going on a road trip with family means hours upon hours locked in a confined space with any combination of parents, siblings and relatives. The pain of road trips has pretty much become a thing of the past with the jump in mobile technology.

People say starting is the hardest part, but they are wrong. I found the most difficult part to be sticking to it and pushing through.

When Verizon announced that they were starting to offer 4G LTE coverage just over a year ago, I got excited. This meant noticeably faster internet speeds that I could carry in the palm of my hand. When it was time for me to get a new phone a year ago, I jumped on a smartphone with 4G LTE. Today, I feel that I have made a mistake.

This weekend comes one of my favorite holidays of the year, Thanksgiving. This means tons of food, being around family and seeing friends come home from out of town. But these are not the only reasons why I love thanksgiving; one of my favorite events happens immediately after I finish my second serving of my mom’s mashed potatoes: Black Friday.
