Ex-ASU worker found shot to death in car

A former ASU employee was found shot to death in Glendale last week, according to Glendale police. Joseph Wessels, 43, of Phoenix, was found dead inside a parked car near a church at Glendale and 63rd avenues on July 21, police said.

The incident has been ruled a homicide.

Wessels worked at ASU for 16 years. He resigned last year to move on and start a new career, ASU officials said. Wessels served in various positions for the vice provost of research, most recently as a sponsored projects officer.

Judy Harris, Wessels' former supervisor, said that Wessels was always a team player in the workplace.

"He had a great sense of humor and was a deep thinker," she said.

Glendale police spokesman Matt Brown said police are following many leads but are reluctant to release much information about the investigation.

Funeral services were held last Thursday. He will be buried in his home state of Illinois. He was unmarried and had no children.
