Roses are red, violets are blue, for Valentine's try something new

Valentine's Day is one of those days when you go out to eat at a restaurant that ends up having a two-hour wait, and nothing is as cool as it was built up to be.

It's a day of disappointments, for the most part. You can call it "singles awareness day" if you want, but no matter what you call it, you're still supposed to come up with something brilliant to do, and nothing comes to mind.

In the interest of helping this Valentine's Day be the first one to actually stand out, here are some tips for drastically different things to do. And remember, Valentine's Day is on a Wednesday this year, so there is a lot going on the weekend before and the weekend after.

For all you singles out there that aren't all that thrilled about a day of love, The Clubhouse at Broadway Road and Dorsey Lane is the place to be.

Described as something like "Come single, leave drunk," The Valentine's Day Massacre on Feb. 14 will feature seven local metal bands playing throughout the night. As a way to counteract all the lovey-dovey stuff you will most likely encounter this day, you can get drunk and mosh. It's $7 at the door.

For the cute and romantic experience, you might try something at The Paper Heart.

This place is already named after a heart and covered in them, so I guess it was expected that they would have sappy love stuff going on Feb. 14. Five singer/songwriters will take the stage throughout the night and sing love songs. So you and your special someone can get a bite to eat and be quietly serenaded. Entrance is $5.

The Saturday before Valentine's Day is a good day, if you like creepy. There will be a fetish ball Feb. 10 at The Sets on Mill Avenue and Southern Road. Think leather, whips and chains. If that's romance to you, The Sets is where to go. There will be DJs spinning records and fetish clothes and toys for sale. The event is $30 at the door.

The Arizona Roller Derby, the closest thing you can get to ultimate cage fighting but with girls, is also putting on an event Feb. 10.

The roller derby team will be celebrating a day of love by beating each other up, and you're invited to watch. The action happens at Casey at The Bat, 3947 E. Union Hills Rd., with live music and angry women all night. This event is $10 per person.

For something more lighthearted, The Alwun House at 12th and Roosevelt streets will be having an erotic poetry reading and festivus Feb. 16. This should prove to be a good compromise for guys and girls on Valentine's Day because girls like poetry and boys like sex, so erotic poetry is really meeting in the middle. The night will also include minstrels and performance. Entrance is $10.

If you'd rather laugh about this day of love, Feb. 17 is the day to do it. My Funny Valentine standup features several great comedians and special guest Page The Village Idiot. This show at Big Daddy's, 2401 W. Union Hills Dr., promises to be a great place to laugh at love with your special someone. It is $5 at the door and $30 for VIP seats.

These are just a few things to do that are somewhat different. I guess if none of them caught your attention, there's always dinner and a movie.
