How to get lucky on St. Patty's Day

Students who can't drop loads of money to head over to Ireland for spring break don't have to worry about missing out on great St. Patrick's Day fun this year. There are plenty of interesting things going on in your own backyard.

For a close-to-the-real-thing Irish experience, Seamus McCaffrey's, 18 West Monroe St., has bands and Irish food like corned beef and cabbage on any given day, but this pub really kicks it up a notch for St. Patty's Day.

"We tent off the street and have music and beer from 6 a.m. that morning to 2 a.m. that night," said Erin Boylan, a bartender at Seamus McCaffrey's. "It's like a circus outside."

Bands include Irish favorites like Liar's Handshake, The Biffo's and The Irish Rover.

While beer is definitely served at this event, it's still a place where people of any age can feel comfortable.

If you're not looking for a real Irish pub for St. Patrick's Day, but you still want to play drinking games, there are plenty of options.

For an event that will include lots of drinking and laughing on March 17, check out the comedy show at The Paper Heart, 750 Grand Ave. Ron Babcock and Ryan McKee of the Modest Proposal Comedy Troupe present an event that promises to turn this holiday into a drinking game.

The premise is simple: Five comics take turns coming on stage and telling jokes. If the crowd laughs, they have to drink. If the crowd doesn't laugh, the comic has to drink.

The show is for all ages, so if you're too young to take part in the drinking game (or you just don't drink), don't worry. The Counter Culture Cafe inside The Paper Heart offers Italian ice, lattes and coffee, and food like pita pizzas and cheesecake.

This event kicks off at 9:30 p.m. and goes until 2 a.m.

If drinking games and green beer aren't your style, Thirteenth Floor Entertainment will be doing a local band showcase on St. Patrick's Day at The Marquee Theatre at 730 N. Mill Ave. in Tempe.

Bands including Rising Conviction, Trip Level and Eyes of the Tempest will be rocking out from 6:30 p.m. to 2 a.m. and just having fun. The feel of the show will be darker than your average St. Patrick's Day show.
