An opportunity to do just that is on its way, as Tempe Improv, at 930 E. University Drive, opens a second stage to showcase a wider variety of laughs, said Nicole Green, who manages Tempe Improv.
The set up of Tempe Improv always included the main level on the second floor where the entrance is, and the top balcony on the third floor, which allows large crowds to be able to get a view of the main stage.
The entrance room is swanky black and white, with posters of comedians decorating the walls - most of them are signed. It almost has a movie theater feel to it, with a bar in the lobby instead of a concession stand.
The venue's new addition is the long, narrow room behind the ticket booth, which Green says will be a sideshow stage with sketch comedy and local comedians.
The new room is about six tables across and 12 deep. The test run for the new stage is this weekend, when a husband-and-wife duo takes the stage.
The Tempe Improv has always supplied plenty of talent, from Dave Chappelle to Jerry Seinfeld. This week, the main stage features the Latino Comedy Tour, which will take place tonight, and Tom Wilson (who played Biff in "Back to the Future") Thursday through Sunday. Also, a performance of "Let the Little Things Go" with Barns & Minor will take the stage earlier in the evening Saturday and Sunday.
Green said the new stage will be phased in with "baby steps," and she's not really sure yet how it will turn out.
If you're not impressed with the new stage, trying some of the Improv's food might cheer you up.
"We just got into crab legs and cocktail sauce," Green said. "But, we have everything. There's even an Improv salad. It's a really diverse menu."
Buying tickets in advance and making reservations is always recommended - the venue can fill up fast. It's also wise to check ahead of time because the space is used occasionally for parties or large groups.
"Any improv depends on who you go see, but I think [Tempe Improv] has a good set up," said Nick Koury, a journalism junior. "I love improvs in general because I like comedy."
