The drive to the border may be just a few hours, but it's quicker, cheaper and easier to get an authentic Mexican experience by merely heading to Tradiciones restaurant in Phoenix.

From the second you walk into the courtyard that leads up to the door of the restaurant, it seems as if you've been transported across the border. Small open-air shops reminiscent of Mexican markets line Tradiciones' entrance. A delicious aroma wafts through the air as you walk by women dressed in traditional, frilly gowns the colors of the Mexican flag and hand-pressing fresh corn and flour tortillas. Behind them, fresh, juicy meat glistens on the turning rotisserie.

Tradiciones' atmosphere inside is just as authentic. On some nights, there is a mariachi trio singing in the corner of the large dining room. The décor is bright, with colorful murals and furniture. Thick, crunchy complimentary chips and thin, slightly spicy tomato salsa are brought to the table almost immediately.

To start, order some guacamole. It's some of the freshest and most flavorful in the Valley, made with ripe, tender avocado and chunks of tomato and onion. Sample it with one of Tradiciones' signature fresh fruit margaritas while perusing the menu — there's even one made with cilantro.

Aside from traditional Mexican fare like tostadas, tamales and enchiladas, Tradiciones offers more unique entrées, as well. If the memory of the juicy meat on the spit outside is unforgettable, try one of the platters offered at Tradiciones. The tender meat — often still on the bone — comes coupled with Mexican rice and charro beans. This saucy blend of pinto beans and onions provides a refreshing change from the bland pile of refried beans found at so many Mexican eateries. Or mix traditional with original and order the Rocky Point tacos. Made with lightly battered fish, radishes, tomato and lettuce and served with a side of tartar sauce and lime, it's a delicious twist on an old Mexican favorite.

Tradiciones also serves traditional Mexican desserts like flan, and diners may want to end a meal with something sweet, if only to linger in the world Tradiciones has created. An escape to Mexico and its flavorful culinary offerings are just moments away thanks to this colorful Phoenix eatery.
