About 50 to 60 percent of the square footage on ASU's Tempe campus is protected by sprinkler systems, University Fire Marshal Jim Gibbs said. Buildings that were constructed within the past decade all have sprinklers, as do all the Tempe-campus residence halls.
Retrofitting buildings with sprinklers can be a costly project, and improvements are done as money allows. Many older buildings on campus, including the Memorial Union, are partially protected by a fire suppression system, which could include sprinklers or other systems that can extinguish a fire.
Gibbs provided this list of partially protected buildings:
Armstrong Hall
Art Building
Business: A and B wings
College of Design South
Engineering Center: A, D and G wings
Grady Gammage Memorial Auditorium
Hayden Library
Language & Literature
Life Sciences Center: A and C wings
Matthews Center
Memorial Union
Old Music Building
Packard Stadium
Payne Hall
Physical Education East
Physical Sciences Center: C, D and F wings
Stauffer Hall: A Wing
Sun Angel Stadium
Sun Devil Stadium
Wells Fargo Arena
Wilson Hall
Some buildings on campus are currently being upgraded with fire suppression systems, Gibbs said. Those include the MU, Administration A and B wings, the former Nursing Building and Psychology North.
But other buildings don't have fire suppression systems in place and aren't currently being retrofitted:
