If you're looking for a quick, cheap lunch, try Lee's Sandwiches, located in a shopping center on the southeastern corner of Warner and Dobson Roads. Lee's touts Eurasian sandwiches — which combine European and Asian flavors — as the main attraction, but the best thing on the menu is the low prices. For less than $5, patrons get a filling sandwich in minutes at this partial-service delicatessen.
Lee's makes sandwiches on two types of freshly baked breads: crusty 10-inch French baguettes and buttery croissants. Patrons are offered every type of sandwich imaginable and then some, with choices like vegetarian avocado, tuna almond, three varieties of pork (cured, grilled and BBQ) and even sardines. Most of the croissant sandwiches are typical deli fare, made with cold cuts, lettuce, tomato, and mayonnaise or mustard. But Lee's showcases its Asian flair in its baguette sandwiches, topping them with tangy pickled carrots, radishes and peppers. All sandwiches are served with a dill pickle and a spicy pepperoncini.
Lee's also offers several mediocre accompaniments that don't quite seem to fit with the theme of the eatery, like fresh-baked pastries, gelato and a long case of canned and bottled beverages, as well as specialty coffees and fruit smoothies. The only exceptional thing about the gelato and smoothies are the flavors. In addition to the usual chocolate gelato and strawberry smoothies are unique, Asian-influenced flavors like lychee, a syrupy sweet berry. Instead, try the Vietnamese coffee: a strong, bitter brew sweetened with condensed milk. It's different from any drink you'd find at Starbucks.
Lee's isn't exactly the most glamorous of delis. It has the impersonal feel of a cafeteria with bright lighting, plain plastic tables and TVs in the corners. There's also an outdoor patio set in an alleyway of the strip mall overlooking the parking lot. With the spectacular prices at Lee's, however, patrons probably won't be picky about the setting.
With something to satisfy your sweet tooth, your caffeine craving and your hunger pangs, Lee's makes for a great lunch spot for college students on a budget. While the sandwiches might not be standout, the prices are, making it a worthwhile stop for anyone looking for a cheap and easy meal.
