This is not your 1920s 3-D film.
Hollywood is shifting toward Real D, a new form of 3-D screens in movie theatres.
"The expansion of Real D 3-D screens to over 1,100 (in quantity) is a milestone in bringing the most advanced 3-D visual experience to moviegoers everywhere," said Michael V. Lewis, Real D chairman, CEO and co-founder in a statement. "Clearly, the next generation of digital 3D is already here in Real D."
Real D has created a digital three-dimensional projection technology that does not require two projectors.
As a result, 3-D images have become more refined and the technology has become affordable to theaters around the world.
Real D went global in 2006 with movies such as "Monster House," "The Nightmare Before Christmas" and "Beowulf."
Currently 24 countries have Real D 3-D theaters and 44 of the states have Real D theaters, including Arizona.
Arizona theaters with Real D capabilities include: AMC Desert Ridge, AMC Mesa Grand, AMC Westgate, Cinemark Mesa, Harkins Arizona Mills, Harkins Arrowhead, Harkins Santan Village, AMC Ahwatukee- Foothills and Century El Con.
At least 4,000 Real D 3-D screens are expected by 2009 across the globe, according to a statement from Real D.
