For a music collection that needs a little refresher, look no further than the TV set. Tune in to some of the most popular shows or check out the soundtracks available on CD or iTunes.
Weeds — Though fans may be disappointed Weeds has taken out the theme song “Little Boxes,” which was covered by different artists each week, there are still many commendable music moments in the show. The soundtrack is a huge contribution to the quirky feel and edgy nature of the drug trafficking comedy. Weeds soundtracks feature songs from bands like Great Lake Swimmers, Beirut and The Mountain Goats.
Mad Men — Now entering its second season, the series’ soundtrack is nothing but a perfect stream of nostalgia guiding viewers through the early ’60s ad agency. The music is a perfect accompaniment to the dialogue and fashions of the show’s time period. But wait. Was that The Decemberists opening a recent episode? Yes, yes it was.
Gossip Girl — Love it or hate it, Gossip Girl is a hipster’s paradise when it comes to music. With a performance by the Pierces and an episode chock full of The Virgins in the first season, the Upper East Side students have the perfect soundtrack to their lives. Featuring bands like The Kills, Band of Horses and Crystal Castles, Gossip Girl shows more depth than its deliciously seedy exterior.
The Hills — Between the vapid, dramatic stares of LC and Audrina, audiences can’t help but notice the music of The Hills. And really, isn’t that what’s keeping the show together anyway? MTV also promotes the artist name and song that is currently playing on the screen. Including artists like Santogold and Leona Lewis, it’s surprisingly more than just a radio hit list.
Grey’s Anatomy — Sensitive types should look no further than Grey’s Anatomy. Episodes generally start with quirky upbeat songs by artists like Ingrid Michaelson and Regina Spektor, which set the tone for witty banter between gorgeous doctors. Audiences can always count on dramatic endings to tug at heartstrings and show the tragic hopelessness in Meredith Grey’s eyes. Maria Taylor singing in the background certainly helps.
