Pinup is back, baby.
Look around in pop culture these days, and pinup’s retro influences are everywhere. Dita Von Teese is a living, breathing throwback to pinup culture. SuicideGirls takes many of its cues from pinup and The Pussycat Dolls bop around in full pinup wear. Albeit all these examples might actually scandalize the sensibilities of some of the pinups of the past, but this is it — pinup is back, with a modern twist.
The resurgence of pinup culture has even reached Phoenix (“All Pinned Up,” pg. 4), with two ASU alums leading the way with their group Arizona Pinup Girls.
Arizona Pin-Up Girls not only showcases all the local cheesecake and modern pinups in this hot, hot state, but also is getting the word out on local designers and businesses. It’s a win-win. Not only are all things pinup completely adorable (Betty Page bangs = awesome), but local designers Lila Jo, who designs some of the cutest hair accessories around, and Black Cherry Clothing, designer of many pinup frocks, deserve all the attention they can get.
SPM also covers other important issues this week, such as you’re throwing a theme party, but a theme party is only as good as it’s theme. So what are some good themes (“Party like a (theme) star, pg. 7)? We’ve got you covered with a list of themes that people would actually want to dress in, unlike those G.I. Joes and Barbie hos or Eskimo and Eskihos parties you keep getting invited to.
We also delve into the highs and lows of buying some new high heels (Head over heels, pg 6). High heels are not only getting cooler by the day with the whacked out heels designers are coming up with, but have incredible effects of toning your legs, while making you feel incredibly powerful and hot (as well as tall) all at once. As a shorty myself, and I mean that in a height sense not in a rap song sense, I completely appreciate this.
Don’t worry, we didn’t forget about you guys either. SPM writer Theresa Dillon is breaking down men’s haircuts, from what style suits what hair type to what product is an all around keeper. And it’s not hair gel, seriously, throw that stuff away.
Also, quick reminder: The next issue, which comes out after spring break, is going to be the last one printed on this passé substance called paper. We’re getting futuristic here at SPM and moving to the Web, where the content will be bigger, better and all in color.
