Ready or not, snow is coming to Arizona State.
The Campus Rail Jam, a nationally touring “grassroots snow sports movement,” according to campusrailjamtour.com, lands on the Student Recreation Center fields this Friday, Feb. 13 to shake up the seasons.
Jointly hosted by the Snowdevils Ski & Snowboard Club and the Programming Activities Board, Campus Rail Jam offers amateur snowboarders an opportunity to compete with their rail-grinding, trick-busting peers in a closed-course environment. Featured in this year’s “Sun Devil-Palooza” festivities, the tour offers 60 openings to local boarders eager to contend for a top spot, a cash reward and a prized ticket to the Finals Competition held annually in Portland, Ore.
Applications to participate are open to everyone, though a brief video is recommended. The tour kicked off Feb. 5 at the University of Arizona, and visits nine West coast colleges before its culmination in Oregon.
Devil-Palooza commences at 2 p.m. on Friday, topped off with a free Say Anything/ Steel Train concert at 7 p.m. Details on music, food, vendors and much more are available at devilpalooza.com.
Campus Rail Jam will be in full force from 1 to 5 p.m., complete with a 35-foot tall ramp, three rails, and most notably — truckloads upon truckloads of real snow.
An “ASU Campus Rail Jam” Facebook group has been steadily gaining members since its creation, with a staggering 400 students currently committed to stopping by the event.
“I’m excited to see winter sports here in Tempe,” says ASU sophomore and education major Jordan Mauldin. “I snowboard and have a bunch of friends who do as well, so I feel like this could be pretty competitive.”
The Campus Rail Jam will undoubtedly offer cool entertainment in even the warmest of climates.
