I know sports is a business, but business is destroying the jersey.
I have six jerseys of my own, and I think they’re a great way to show support for your team.
They are expensive, anywhere from $70 for a blank MLS jersey to $195 for an authentic customized NFL jersey, but since most teams use the same jersey design year after year, a jersey seems like a solid investment.
Not anymore.
The last few years have seen a huge increase in the amount of jerseys available. It seems every team now employs a third jersey for no apparent reason (I’m looking at you, Coyotes and Cardinals).
Suddenly, NFL teams are wearing throwback jerseys with increasing frequency. And overseas, for the first time ever, all 20 teams in the English Premier League changed jersey designs for the 2010-11 season, rendering last year’s models obsolete.
All of this means that in order to keep up with your team you may have to buy three new jerseys every year. That means shelling out hundreds of dollars, which is ridiculous.
While there are definitely some cool new jerseys out there, I think I’ll just stick with the ones I have, outdated or not.
