Get Fresh: Halloween's Innocence Lost

It’s hard to remember the days when Halloween costumes did not involve heels — when it was rare for stomachs to even show and when a princess costume actually included fabric. But as soon as high school hit, we all dropped our innocent pillowcase trick-or-treating, transforming our full-length costumes into Halloween attire that appears overly skimpy and ten sizes too small.

Halloween costumes are no longer about dressing as the cutest witch or hippie flower child, but about dressing as the sexiest nurse or vampire. Halloween costume stores even have a separate costume section specifically for “Sexy Costumes.”

Most of today's costumes have the word "sexy" in them. Some of my favorites are “Sexy Princess Leia Slave Costume” (you don’t even want to know what that costume looks like), “Sexy Treasure Hunt Pirate Costume,” “Adult Sexy Cuddly Lion Costume,” and to top them off, “Naughty Vampire Costume.” So when someone asks these people what they are for Halloween they may simply say, “I’m Sexy Princess Leia in her slave outfit.”

The typical nurse, police officer, firefighter, sailor, referee, and French maid costumes have been the most popular sexy costumes year after year. You would think girls would learn since they tend to have the same costume as every other girl at the party. There are also those certain costumes that continue to be sold every year but you really question why. For instance every year the “Sexy Strawberry Girl” costume and the “Candy Corn Witch” costume continue to be popular. Where the costume designers actually come up with these ideas is beyond me.

While I was browsing through costumes, I could not believe how many Disney-themed and religious costumes they had attached with the word sexy. Talk about contradicting. There was a nun’s costume with a pleather dress that would cause anyone to sin just by looking at it. The sexy Disney collection included Snow White, Ariel, Jasmine and Sleeping Beauty. To top off the innocent-goes-sexy look, there was even a Mrs. Potato Head costume. Who thought "Toy Story 3" would have an effect on sexy Halloween costumes?

Aside from the risque costumes, people this year are also dressing to resemble the infamous Snookie, Pauly D and the Situation from "Jersey Shore," in addition to Lady Gaga and of course the Avatar costumes. The cast members from "Jersey Shore" are really going to have to disguise themselves from the other lookalikes.

On a college student budget, it may be hard spending 50 bucks on a few pieces of fabric. So, instead there are other ways to create the same sexy costume look without over-spending. Thrift stores are the best places to find cheap, easy and imaginative, as well as original, items for your costumes. You can even achieve a sexy look by cutting a skirt from your closet even shorter. Sexy costumes really do not take much effort.

So, whether you decide to go for the Naughty Vampire look, or keep the traditional sexy police officer look, make sure you wear comfortable shoes, be safe, and most of all have fun.

Get Fresh Tips:

  • Be original with your sexy costume this year and go with something that is not very popular.
  • You do not have to spend a ton to achieve the sexy look.
  • Wear comfy heals or shoes.
  • You may want to choose a versatile costume — that way you can have multiple costumes for the whole weekend.
  • It is also okay to go with a costume that is not “sexy” at all. As long as you are comfortable, that's all that matters.
