Listen up, freshmen. You may have noticed something different about the weather when you walk outside. It no longer melts the skin off your body, and no longer makes you want to change your outfit five different times in one day. Because Arizona weather can be a bit bipolar around this time of year, I'm here to help guide you on the proper dress for Arizona’s “fall” and “winter” seasons.

First and foremost, those of you who are out-of-state freshmen might as well send home those winter snow boots and heavy jackets because you will definitely stick out like a sore thumb here. You may even want to keep your flip-flops and shorts around, which can be a weird concept to get used to.

When deciding what to wear for Arizona’s fall weather, you should choose something that can give you options later in the day. By this I mean layering up. The mornings will begin cooler, but with Arizona’s desert weather, the afternoon will start to warm up, which will allow you to peel away your first layer.

You may see some Arizonans become baffled as to what to wear during these confusing seasons, but whatever you do, do not follow their bad habits. A popular fall mishap for girls is the infamous UGG Boots with tiny jean shorts; this is definitely a major no-no. It is like they couldn’t let go of summer with their shorts, but wanted to go full out with winter on their feet. I mean, decide on one season already!

Another Arizonan fashion dilemma is over dressing for the cool weather. All of the stores will carry the same heavy winter clothing, so therefore people feel the need to experience a winter-y feeling and still buy heavy jackets when in reality they will only be worn twice. What ever you do, do not fall into the naïve Arizonan heavy jacket-buying trap.

Smart Arizonans will take their summer clothes and transform their wardrobes into winter clothes. With summer dresses, girls will add tights and leggings and then layer on a jacket and a scarf. As for guys, they usually “tough” the coldness out and wear the same thing they wore all summer. However, the select few may wear a sweater or a jacket and jeans, but of course nothing too out there. These Arizonans know how to dress for an Arizona winter success.

When it comes to shoes, it can be a little tricky. I recommend any type of closed toe shoe, however, you will still see the few that cannot seem to give up their sandal fetish. Trust me, their toes will eventually turn blue. For girls, a cute stylish flat or light boots are the perfect and acceptable shoe for Arizona fall and winter. Guys mostly wear the same Vans that they have worn everyday, so not much will change for them.

Arizona seasons can cause a lot of stress when it comes to deciding what to wear. But if you follow these simple tips for smart Arizona fall and winter dressing, you will no longer become frustrated with your wardrobe, or worse, wear no clothes at all.

Get Fresh Tips:

  • Layer your clothes during the fall and winter seasons.
  • Do not over buy winter clothes; you will not need them here.
  • Choose one season for your outfit; not summer and winter.
  • Convert your summer wardrobe into a winter wardrobe (leggings with dresses etc.).
  • Wear closed-toe shoes; your can and will turn blue .
