Get Fresh: Recipe for Scheduling Success

Registering 101.
Registering 101.

As cliché as it sounds, this semester has flown by. In only 12 days, we will be stuffing our faces with Thanksgiving delicacies, and in about 31 days, we will be temporarily saying goodbye to fall semester and saying hello to Winter break. However, rewinding a bit back to the present state, spring semester registration is already coming and going.

Scheduling for classes can be a confusing process and can be a little overwhelming at times. We are basically scheduling classes to map out the rest of our lives — a little scary. That is why it is so important to stay on track with the classes that our major map tells us to take instead of taking the easy way out.

Once you have finally figured out what classes to take for spring semester, next comes figuring out which professor to choose. The best and most relatively trusted place for recommended professors is ratemyprofessor.com. All you have to do is type in Arizona State University or the professor’s name and, hopefully, someone has rated them previously. If the professor has been rated fairly high and has positive comments, then that is a very promising sign.

Another complicated step in the scheduling process can be trying to figure out the times and days for those particular classes. Many classes are offered at different times and days during the week. The most dreaded day to have classes is either early in the morning or on Fridays. However, not every class will make the perfect schedule, so just take some coffee or 5-hour Energy for those extra early days.

Now, after you have picked the hottest — and hopefully the most easy to understand — professors, scheduled no classes on Fridays, and picked classes based on your major map, you are finally ready to completely register.

Actually registering for classes will literally take five minutes — it is that simple. If you click on the spring semester tab on the MyASU home page, then click on the Registration tab or the Class Search tab, you can directly begin adding classes. Make sure that you completely follow through with all three steps, or else there will be no spring semester schedule for you.

If you want to be ahead of the game, you can even sign up for classes during winter break. Most classes can be taken online, and are not even offered during the fall and spring semesters. I am taking a Beatles class during winter break for humanities, which in my opinion is pretty cool.

To make a long story short, make sure you sign up for your classes; and make sure you sign up on the day you are given. The longer you wait, the less options you will have to choose from; and yes that will mean classes on Fridays and early mornings. Get Fresh Tips:

  • Follow your major map for classes — you don’t want to be stuck taking simple required classes later on.
  • Go onto ratemyprofessor.com to help make choosing which professor to take easier.
  • Try writing out your entire schedule before you actually schedule your classes.
  • Register for classes the day and time that you are given; you were assigned that for a reason.
  • Most importantly, don’t forget!
