It’s that time of year again. No, not taxes. Something much more upbeat. And musical. And free. It’s Devilpalooza 2011! The lovely free concert that graces our campus once a year on the SRC fields, complete with entertainment and good music (and a ferris wheel!). This year’s line-up promises to be a good one: Motion City Soundtrack, fun., and The Maine. At least one thing these three groups hold in common? The fact that each band has an uplifting sound that’s sure to produce some smiles (or at least a slight head nod).
Motion City Soundtrack hails from Minnesota, but their happy-go-lucky sound would make more sense on a sunny beach whilst you twirl happily amongst the waves. Their pop-punk sound has been keeping its fast head boppin’ tempo since 1997. One of my favorites from them is the wonderfully catchy “Everything is Alright:"
Next on the line-up is the wonderfully eclectic band fun. Comprised of former members (and current members) of bands like The Format and Steel Train, fun. is a delightful medley of sounds and vocals that develop an infectious harmony as their songs crescendo to a satisfying execution. The way they build string, vocals, and guitar into each of their songs blend together to create something truly worthwhile. Their unique music will no doubt be outstanding live. I can’t wait to witness it for myself. One the many great songs by them? “At Least I’m Not Sad (As I Used to Be):"
The last band on the list is The Maine, who hail from our very own Tempe, AZ. They are of the same pop-punk-fueled substance that drives Motion City Soundtrack, but with more emphasis on the pop side. Their catchy songs of love and the search for it would not be out of place in some sort of overdramatic romantic-comedy scene where one half of the couple is running through the airport (yet miraculously not arousing suspicion from security personnel) trying one last time at love with whoever is getting on the plane. Their songs are reminiscent of the beginning stages of dating, passionate and all-consuming with a dash of a school yard crush. My pick from them is “Kiss and Sell:"
So get ready for a nice break from studying (at least a well-deserved distraction). And for fun. (the band). And for fun (the action). Devilpalooza will be Friday Feb. 11th, on the SRC field. It’s from 2:00-11:00pm. The concert portion will start around 6:30pm.
