I love painting, but personally, I don’t think I’m very talented. Honestly though, that’s not what’s most important. Although skill obviously plays a role, what can make or break a work of art is the technique used. One technique that I came across was using squeeze bottles filled with watery paint.
Do you remember those old-fashioned plastic ketchup bottles that you would squeeze to death just to get that last squirt of ketchup on your plate? Well these same sorts of squeeze bottles can be used in a similar fashion, but with paint. What I like to do is take a bottle and squeeze a good amount of paint in it, but water it down so that when shaken, the mixture is runny. This will make for a cool “trickle –down” effect on your canvas.
Warning: This technique can be quite messy... But the final product is completely worth it!
You can essentially use whatever type of paint you want—I like to use water color paints or even cheap Crayola brand paints that come in mass quantities. I also get multiple clear plastic bottles, available at any sort of craft store, as well as online. I tend to make each bottle representative of only one color. Create your runny mixture by adding more water than paint and shaking and stirring your concoction. Once ready, (and you’ll know it’s ready because it basically will look like a colorful liquid) you will be ready to start squirting. Make sure before you start to put down some sort of tarp or newspaper because the paint drips and it can be very messy.
In my first creation using this technique, I painted clouds with regular watercolors. After allowing the preliminary artwork to dry, I used various colors from the squirt bottles to create a sort of colorful rain. I used the three primary colors blue, red, and yellow, and had those colors drip down together to make other colors, like green, orange, and purple. This painting is definitely one of my favorite art pieces to date!
Try making your own and let me know how you like using this painting technique!
