Tonight: Devilpalooza Brings Bands, Snow and Wheels

This year's annual Devilpalooza is ready to whirl you around — literally — and supply enough entertainment to fuel a state fair. A Ferris wheel, live music, sports and games are only some of the highlights of Devilpalooza, a free and open-to-the-public event presented by ASU’s Programming and Activities Board, Undergraduate Student Government and the Student Recreation Complex.

PAB Assistant Concert Series Director Amanda Markell says the blueprint is very similar to the summer music festival Van's Warped Tour.

ASU’s SRC will be blasting high-energy vibes Friday as Motion City Soundtrack, fun. and Tempe locals the Maine take the stage starting at 6:30 p.m.

“I'm always happy to see bands with a local following play ASU,” Markell says, referring to the Maine, whose latest album reached no. 16 on the Billboard charts. “People like to see artists from their hometown receive national recognition and expand the Tempe music scene.”

Devilpalooza will also feature the annual Campus Rail Jam competition that promotes amateur ski and snowboarding with ramps and 20 tons of snow to work with. (According to its website, CRJ's goal is to “host competitions that turn down the suck, and turn up the fun.")

If cold sports aren't for you, there will also be ramps for skateboarders and a FMX pro tour competition sponsored by Coca Cola for BMX riders.

While the athletes and musicians do their thing, there will be plenty of vendors and booths to entertain the crowds, plus two frozen yogurt booths, virtual paintball and a Ferris wheel to enjoy a nice view of the Tempe campus.

Devilpalooza 2011 is this Friday from 2 to 10 p.m. Live music starts at 6:30 p.m.
