Piece of Craft: Eggs as a Holiday Centerpiece

I’m not a religious person by any means, but I’ve always loved the symbolic meaning of the egg. During Easter, eggs seem almost too ubiquitous; they are hidden in the plastic form for children to find or they are hard boiled to eat for the holiday or to use for crafts. For Passover, the hard boiled egg is a very important component of the Seder plate. Although both these holidays celebrate different things in their respective religions, they both use the egg in the same way: as a meaning of spring, birth, and new life.

As we are nearing the end of yet another semester and another year, it makes perfect sense that we, as students, are preparing ourselves for some sort of “new life,” whether that means graduation for some of us, a summer spent abroad, or just a new year and a new semester waiting to happen. Because of this, I think it’s the perfect time to use eggs in a craft.

Hard  boiled eggs can make the perfect centerpiece for your kitchen table (or a nice decoration for a windowsill or bookshelf) this time of year. One thing you can do is draw various patterns on your eggs with sharpie. They will look quite cool and dignified, especially if you keep it simple by using black! Another great way to make a grouping of nice eggs would be to paint on them using watercolor paints. After painting them various colors, you can leave them as they are or try drawing on them as well. I would recommend using sharpie again or using a watercolor pencil. If you use a watercolor pencil, you can even draw on them while they are still wet, which creates an awesome and unique look! Another great idea could be to splatter paint your eggs.

Besides painting your eggs, you can also use food coloring to make your eggs different colors. Another technique that could be used is to decoupage your eggs using different colored tissue paper.

Once dry, place your eggs in a bowl or a basket and create a nice nest for them. This nest is now their new home and can serve as your new home decoration.
