Bravo to passing the gay marriage law in New York. Friday’s vote to allow gay marriage in the state of New York was a vote for equal rights. Hopefully it will set a precedent for other states to do the same. Obviously, since Arizona’s Proposition 102 passed in 2008, the effects of New York’s vote might take awhile to reach the desert.

Boo to forest fires. The Wallow fire in Arizona is now well over 500,000 acres and has finally begun to be controlled. It is now nearly 80 percent contained, but the fire is still a threat to some residential homes. The fire has destroyed 32 homes and damaged five others in just under a month. Too much of our forests have been burned, and the hot, dry summer is just getting started.

Bravo to the Dallas Mavericks for defeating the Miami Heat. Watching Dirk Nowistki run off the court in the final moments of the NBA Finals was an emotional scene. It was especially enjoyable watching LeBron James go home without a title after such a boisterous celebration when he decided to play for Miami. It’s unlikely, but hopefully Dirk’s buddy, Steve Nash, can enjoy the same emotional celebration in the near future.

Boo the return of heat on campus. Get ready for more sweaty backs and smelly armpits. It’s 100 degrees outside and it will continue to be in the triple digits until the start of the school year. This is summer in the Valley, but it’s also home and we have to accept its imperfections.
