Boo to Arizona’s bipolar weather. If you moved about the campus on Thursday, you probably felt yourself either melting from the heat or sweating profusely. Then in the evening there was a massive, dusty haboob. While haboob is a funny word, we don’t think the storm is funny. It makes walking outside without getting dust in your mouth impossible.
Bravo to a smooth move-in process on campus. With tens of thousands of students moving in, the process was fairly streamlined. Though move-in is akin to stuffing sardines in a can, the University made it surprisingly easy, and for that we give them kudos. Hopefully the remainder of school functions goes just as smoothly.
Boo to the chaos of traffic on Thursday. Though it was the first day of school, traffic — both on the road and on campus — was especially bad. Evading bikes and skateboards wasn’t in the description of skills needed to succeed, or even enroll at ASU. While dodging a car will help you dodge a ball, we aren’t looking to enter a dodgeball tournament.
Bravo to the opening of the Pat Tillman Veterans Center on Tuesday. Located in the basement of the Memorial Union, the Center provides services to help the veterans’ transition from the military life to student life, which is by no means an easy process. We are forever indebted to these brave men and women for their self-less service.
Boo to the use of Tasers and other pre-show chaos at the Fall Welcome Concert. While it is important to maintain an orderly environment when putting on such a large event, the use of Tasers should never become an issue. Students were also fainting outside due to the heat and crowds, and glass doors were broken. This was a less than ideal way to start the school year.
Bravo to Cartel’s expansion into the microbrewery business. While there are several breweries in the Tempe area, the owners are looking to create more of a study atmosphere at their brewery. With the wild popularity of their coffee shop, especially with young adults, we look forward with anticipation to the opening of Cartel’s latest venture and a beer, coffee and homework combination.
