As cliché and common as any girl who cares about what she’s wearing or enjoys swiping her plastic at the mall, I love fashion. I always have, always will. I respect labels and hunt for sales, and I’m the type of girl who will spend my last dollar at Nordstrom, then later find I have no money for gas. I could probably go an entire year without ever wearing the same thing twice and can tell you the name of the OPI nail polish you’re wearing on the spot. So I’ve decided, instead of using my unusual talents for my own amusement, here I am, using what I know to entertain all who are interested (and hopefully teach you a few new things along the way).
My name is Amanda Larson and I am a junior in the Walter Cronkite School of Journalism and Mass Communications studying journalism with a focus in public relations while also pursuing a certificate in Special Events Management. As a full-time student, I am also simultaneously working four part-time jobs, one being your new SPM Fashion and Beauty Blogger.
“Broke’s the New Black” is my view of fashion as a college student and a way to share principles, tips, and style updates throughout the year. My blog is for us, as broke students, who are interested in fashion while keeping in mind that we have bills to pay and probably need money to eat every once in a while. It will cater to lower priced items, discounted designer pieces, and how to follow trends for less. I also plan to profile ASU students and explain their personal style, provide information and personal experiences about beauty treatments and products, and simply share the fundamentals of the industry.
So why fashion? I’ve been fascinated with the industry since I was young, and after taking four years of fashion in high school, I knew I had to make my future about it. Instead of attending fashion design school, I chose to study journalism. I currently work retail as an independent stylist and get hired freelance to do clients’ makeup. I interned at Sir Alistair Rai, a worldwide contemporary clothing line, and have even done various modeling jobs in the past.
I have tweezed, waxed, tinted, dyed, exfoliated, moisturized, and god knows what else for the sake of curiosity. In other words, I will try (or have tried) everything once. So hopefully you’ll believe me when I speak and consider my opinions and advice. I’m here for you, so let’s work it.
