Nostalgia: that revered emotion that can be triggered by the smallest of trinkets or devices. Nostaligia’s greatest gift can sometime result from a song not heard in years, those first notes and chords taking you away to that far away land of memory and experience.
Luckily, the artist who’s making his way to the East Valley this week invokes many of these symptoms. He even composed a song entitled “Spotlight (Oh Nostalgia),” coincidentally enough. Who is this mysterious figure that brings back such ardent memories of my youth? Fall Out Boy’s lead singer Patrick Stump has decided to strike it out on his own, and this week the Valley will get a taste of his fresh new flavor.
This new flavor while wildly different from its Fall Out Boy counterpart leaves an aftertaste of hip hop influence. The soul infused new material is a far cry from “A Little Less Sixteen Candles A Little more “Touch Me,” but Stumps’ voice (as usual) carries quite the neo-soul wallop. This new context within his music will reach a wider spectrum of listeners and even broaden the horizons of old veterans. Now on tour to promote his upcoming full album Soul Punk out early September, audiences get a great preview of what’s to come in the next chapter of the Patrick Stump Saga. Some standouts from his new system of sound?
Patrick Stump will be performing at Martini Ranch this Tuesday, Aug. 30. Tickets are $20. Doors open at 8 p.m.
