As it is a new school year, I’m sure, just like me, most have you have either moved into the dorms, a new apartment, house, condo, etc. I think moving in somewhere new is the worst, especially in this Arizona heat. Sweat drips from areas you didn’t even think possible and you’re more tired than you’ve ever been. But once you get your second wind, it’s time to do what you do after you move-in somewhere new: decorate!

There are so many fun things you can do to decorate a new space... Really, there are no limits!  From putting up art and posters to hanging lights to building bookshelves and painting furniture and walls, there are so many opportunities to use your creativity to make your living space more “you.”

For my new condo, I recently painted a piece with my friend Mackenzie.  We went to Goodwill and picked up a cheap end table for only $14.99 that had a few nicks in it, but since we were going to paint it, none of the scratches and dents really mattered. We sanded the entire table down using sandpaper and then bought green chalkboard paint from Home Depot and coated the entire table.  Chalkboard paint is really cool product. I’ve seen many people paint whole doors or walls with chalkboard paint, allowing them to then write grocery lists or notes on the walls. These days, chalkboard paint doesn’t just come in black; if you buy the colored paint you get a choice of about nine different colors for your project.

This project was simple and fun, but our cute green table has added a great deal of character to my roommate’s and my living room.  We expect all our friends to sign in chalk upon their arrival.  Chalkboard paint (or any other paint for that matter) can be a great asset to spice up any wall or piece of furniture you may have in your new place of residence!
